@Jenn, well i actually do think it looks very much like an african scape with a lovely tall tree where some animals might find some shade during the midday sun... especially if i look at it from the top.. i think you've done very well, it looks really good :)

i dont think i'd be able to come even close to achieving something like that so i'll take my hat off to you, in fact there are very few people that i've seen who can pull it off, i remember @Vis had a real gift for it as well..

Thanks for all the encouraging comments :D I am enjoying my tank hugely. Just waiting impatiently for the plants to grow now

@Rico I am using the Tetra Tex Ex 600. I'm very impressed - it's very quiet and comes with more fittings than you'll need. Good price too.

@mydummyname You just need to be bold enough to make mistakes. You are the only person that has to like your scape because you are going to look at it every day. As long as the fish are safe and not harmed, the worst that can happen is you don't like it and you have to start again - no biggie. And I can guarantee that if you like it, other people will as well - not everybody, but that's not what you're aiming for. As long as ou enjoy the process and learn from your mistakes (as I am)

Great looking scape @Jenn. You pulled the scape off nicely. It really looks pleasing to the eye. Now for the weekly updates on plants. :p

Thanks all for the encouragement. I was going to take photos on the 9th, because that will be a month since it was set up. Now this white spot problem has spannered me ;) About a week ago I was feeling very despondent because it didn't seem like anything was growing. Then I looked at the photos I took at the beginning & I was quite thrilled to see there's actually a huge difference :D Will post photos as soon as the fishies are better - don't want to stress them even more with flash and cleaning the glass and all that prep that comes before taking pics.

    Update :(

Bad news - The metronidazole didn't work. I must have picked up a resistant strain of ich. I transferred the fish to a bucket so that I could try methylene blue. The bucket had a sponge filter, a heater and some vallis from my natural pool. I also added salt.

Good news - Next day I see fry (yes, fry) swimming in the bucket. Remember the vallis? Must have been some stowaway goldfish eggs.

Very bad news - none of the fish made it.

Good news - except the goldfish fry. About 5/6 of them.

Bad news - goldfish fry disappearing...? Found the culprit - a stowaway dragonfly larva. Fished him out and put him back in the pool.

Good news - 1 goldfish fry left that is now (since yesterday) living in a big ceramic pot with a sponge filter and water lilies. S/he's about 1.5cm long. When s/he gets bigger s/he can join his/her brothers and sisters back in the pool.

After that little detour it's back to the actual ADA tank - No new fish yet, but plants are still growing. I have been "feeding" fish food to give the filter bacteria something to do. I have 2 li'l pygmy corys and 3 li'l Neolebias ansorgii that are going into this tank as soon as I am feeling brave ...

    Pics to follow...

Sorry to hear about your losses and congrats on your gains. Did the dragonfly larvae eat the fry?
