What is your suggestion on buying a UPS for my tank.
I have a 3000l/ph pump in my sumpfilter, a 900l/ph external cannister filter, power head inside the tank to aid in airation, two 300 watt heaters and a two by 80W light.

i would only put the return pump and the external filters on back up. The rest will just drain your backup system in no time at all!

Godd idea. Judging by the equipment it sounds like a big tank. I would therefor not power the lights or heaters... These just drain the UPS too fast. The filters are the most important. An hour of power loss is already detrimental to the filter bacteria

Would you have any idea how long a 1400VA UPS would last ?

No idea. It all depends on how many watts and amps your equipment will be drawing. But i actually dont know how to calculate it

UPS is not a good idea for the following reasons:
    1. It will last about 5 min then the battery has run down
    2. Most of the UPS's run a sqaure wave current which can not be used on equipment that has motors on them
    3. You best bet is to get an inverter that run on a true sign wave current

With an inverter you also have to build a battery bank of at least 3 batteries, this will last you well up to 8 hours, but again you will not connect your lights and heater but only your pumps.

I have bought an inverter for R1500 and then 3 batteries for about R800 each.

OK, there are two places but i am not sure what there prices are, and you have to make sure you take an inverter that is true sine wave otherwise you will blow up everything. Your batteries need to be the deep cycle batteries.
