so my question is, this is only for breeding purposes and not display.

wont plastic tubs be cheaper to use than tanks?

I never see anyone using tubs for breeding, why?

is there something wrong with the tubs or do breeders ext want to see the fish from the front and not the top?

just a question as I am contemplating using tubs instead of tanks.

obviously I would still have my display tanks here and there, as I love watching my fish. but I'm talking about guppies ext using tubs to breed them in? and raising fry in tubs.

    just a thought

    thanks.

Tubs work 100%. I have bred plenty of ancistus and other fish in them with a problem. A lot cheaper aswell.

thanks for the reply, yea it is ALOT cheaper. I mean I pay 170 bucks for a 40L tank and if I go to the tub store a 100L costs me 50-80 bucks a shot and I can stack and drill them with no hassles. no racks even needed, lol. I have a system planned out for tubs but was just wondering if it would be okay.

I use tubs for quarantine and transferring purposes, don't see why not for breeding. Definitely a whole lot cheaper :)

Breeding, quarantine, hospital, tubs work for all, cheaply and effectively only reason we want tanks is so we can view our fish

I bred fish in plastic tubs.
    It works well.

One thing to be mindful of, is the heater can either melt or soften the plastic.

Surely only when it touches the plastic. If the heater is placed on the bottom...on top of two suction cups, the element wont touch the bottom. And even breeding at 28-30degrees, the water wont be hot enough to influence the structure of the tubs...would it??

Why do the plastic clips that hold the heater in place not melt, why do plastic heater guards not melt?

Out of interest I got a 120L container, that I want to use to treat and heat water before doing water changes in my 250L tank.
With a 200W heater set at 28°C the plastic of the container got warm enough that the volume of the water pushed the sides of the container outwards.
The heater was not in contact with the plastic at all, yet just the heat was enough to soften the plastic.

As an aside, I thought I had everything figured out when it came to doing the water change.
Using a syphon I cleaned the substrate, and removed 10 buckets of water.
Thinking I had everything in hand I put the small water pump I had bought for the purpose into the water container, with plastic tubing leading up to the tank, and started the pump.
Water pushed up about half way to the tank.
I had bought a 320L pump, but had failed to look at the maximum height it can pump.
An expensive lesson, as I had to rush off to buy a 1400L/h pump that did what the smaller pump was supposed to.

ill be using tubs that can withstand the heat so that isn't a problem. was just making sure that they wouldn't give off any toxins into the water ext. thanks for all the input guys

That's the point I am trying to make.
Try not to let the heater touch the plastic!
