    Yes, good tip, AquaS.

Henk, at the airports (I mean the airports company) they are not bothered whether there are fishes in your hand luggage, Security has to check on contents with regard to dangerous contents, not livestock. The responsibility to stop livestock as hand luggage lies with your carrier, but they do not bother to ask you about this because this is really the exception that someone transports fishes. But now just try to take a little lively puppy on board and watch the response!

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

It is also a good idea to always double bag it.

Yes, that is right, but it almost goes without saying to have double bags if you are transporting fishes by air.

For us who have done it many times before it goes as common sense, but for somebody that has never done it before, it might not be so common sense. So mentioning it might just help preventing somebody less experienced from an unwanted incident.

Indeed, thanks @AquaS, I was quite nervous at the thought of passing security etc. before reading the recent posts.

I also thought about a method of suspending the bag in a plastic(protein shake) jar by cutting some holes in the lid and then tying the bag to the lid before screwing it on.
That way the bags are protecting from any sharp objects too.

Another thing, is it better to keep them in the dark during transport, eg. an opaque jar, since they'll be more at peace during 'night' time and therefore less stressed?

@Immy....no,no,no with the suspended protien shake magafter idea.... Double bagged with oxygen - billions of fish transported this way around the world every year - why reinvent the wheel?

Darkened container to keep bag in though is a great idea... Also starving the fish for a day or two before you fly will help with keeping water quality better....

    Hi Azure,

Something that I learnt from the pet stop guys is to add some shredded pieces of black plastic bag INTO the bag in which the fishes are. This actually gives the fishes some hiding place, but because they are not plants, they do not use any oxygen. I think this is also very useful.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Yeah we do this with all Cichlid species(especialy Malawi's) as well as Labeo spc. Sharks and Pleco's - helps a lot - just cut up a garbage bag into 1 x 10 cm strips and pop some in bag....

I agree with Prof this helps a lot.. This helps a great deal to relax the fish.
