    Hi guys

So this filter is less than a week old and it was silent at the startup, after cleaning it and putting everything back together, there is this very noisy rattle noise, almost like the impeller is off balance.

can anybody help please. As i know these filters are dead silent.

    Thanks

Was there maybe a bearing or bushing that you forgot to replace? and was the impeller seated properly? Also is it functioning correctly regardless of the noise?

I just love it when the moderators blame the supplier after the client opened up the unit and cleaned it. I am with @S4CR0S4NCT - you might have missed something when you put it back. make sure that the end of the shaft that goes into the motor unit is actually in the rubber holder on the inside.

At which point in this thread did you assume that Ivan opened up the filter in a way that voided the guarantee? Please indicate to me because I have not seen this in this thread. EVERYONE knows that when you "open a filter to clean it- and then put it back together again" the author is referring to firstly the normal cleaning procedure, and secondly, the housing where the impeller fits is supposed to be opened and checked periodically. This is why this part of the pump is "open-able" without voiding warranties.

Everyone who has been around the forum for a little longer would know that Ivan works for Dory Pet's over the weekends. We can thus safely assume that he is a little bit more knowledgeable than most with regards to what should and shouldn't be done. We can also safely assume that Ivan put the filter back together properly, and when he heard the noise, he would have double checked.

The reason why I responded so quickly with an exchange option is because Ivan is fortunate enough to be in contact with the suppliers. Life is about who you know... use the contacts.

@Zoom - the filter was fine till Ivan opened it up which means something went either wrong with the reassembly or a sand particle got into the impeller casing. I have been using canister filters of various makes for many years. The impeller wont make a noise unless you reassembled it wrong or something is grinding away inside the casing.

    Hi Ivan

Do not send it back now, read here 1st!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Before I answer, I work on the assumption that it is pumping water and that you did prime the filter. If not, the advise below is useless!!!

First ensure there are nothing entangled with the impeller, if this is not the case! Tilt the canister to release any possible trapped air. Sometimes air around the impeller can cause this.

If this still fails to rectify the problem find a knowledgeable person to assist you in inspecting your re-assembly (come to me if you can not find one) 99% of the time it is the hobbyist and not the product that are the cause of these kind of noise. If it is the 1% then I know Tetra will replace without ANY hesitation :)

I do not think sending it back to the supplier would solve your problem in the long run at all. They are just going to find your mistake and rectify it, you will repeat the same mistake again, leading to LOADS of frustration and posts like "....... canister is crap" or "I will never buy a product from ......... again" THIS IS NOT NEEDED.

    Hi Ivan

What tank are you running this cannister on that it needed cleaning in less than 7 days?

    regards

The tank was a bit hazy and i filled the canister baskets with filterwool. so in order to put the old filter material back i had to clean the filter.

@Moolis - I have tried all tricks in getting the air out and after a few attempts it was still making noise. I checked the impeller and all is clean. rubbers are still in tact and it looks like a new filter, so where the noise came from no one knows. thats why it got sent back.

Oh, and....As I suggested initially (my post kicked up a great deal of unnecessary dust {and exposed certain people for...}) return it to your supplier and get them to look at it. Tetra is a great company and I'm sure they will sort it out for you
