Yep, Malaysian trumpeter snail, lives in your substrate, nocturnal in nature. They are generally quite useful in that they turn the substrate over and eat leftover food and detritus. They can reach plague-like proportions especially if you overfeed, and you'll literally have 1000's in your tank. If you go to your tank at midnight and switch on the light you'll see how many you have.

Thanks Jwh, so would you say the benefit is bigger than the harm or vice versa.

AFAIK, no harm - unless they die on mass then you will have a water quality issue.

depends on personal preference. i personally love having them.

the population will only get out of control if you over feed your fish. there is too much lighting in your tank and sometimes if the temperature is too high. otherwise the population stays in check

Thanks for the responses ,will have to monitor that tank more closely, like the fact that they don't prefer plants. Because I can't say the same about my apple snails.

I purposefully chuck loads into my tank - Ray and Lungfish food.
my LFS is happy to give me bag fulls of them that infest some of their tanks.
