    Hi guys,

Well im really confused over what to do with my tank at the moment,
I had a Common pleco in my Discus tank and since removing him(became to big, started harassing the Cory cats) Iv had this really annoying problem with Green algea.

Now i want to buy a fish to replace him (his now living with the goldfish for now)

One that eats mostly algae , Wont grow larger or be a threat to the Discus and wont bother my cory catfish or eat my Cardinal and neon tetras.

Would it be safe for me to get one of these Siamese algea eater fish? or can one suggest another fish i could go for? Something thats peacefull . Ignores the rest and is not troublesome?

And how many should i get? Would one do?

    Thanks

    Geez

    1. Pleco with Discus???
    2. Neon Tetras with Discus???

Instead of getting another fish to do the dirty work, do regular water changes and reduce light to 5 hours Max.

I suggest you do some reading on Discus care and tank mates before you decide on that SAE.

    hi Tank master,

The pleco wasnt a problem at all with the discus, He wasnt really a big problem with the corys, Though the reason why i said it was a problem was because on feeding time , they used to compete for food, even though he had his cucumber and tablets,Thats why i removed him from the discus tank.

The neons have been with the discus for over 3 years now, thay have grown quite alot since then, havnt had a problem thus far. , infact iv noticed that the discus feel more at peace with the neons and cardinals around them. I did remove them once for 2 days and the discus hid behind the plants , When reintroducing them to the tank the discus were out and about all the time. My Corys and Tetras are thriving with the discus atm.
Apart from Water temp, why do you say thay are not compatible?

ok Back to topic on the siamese Algea Eater, any suggestions?

hi zippy, the neon and cardinals are acting as dither fish for your discuss, it means that they are making your discus feel safe.. in the same way that a group of tinfoil barbs calm down bala sharks..

environment means everything for fish happiness, and dither fish create a safe feeling environment for certain fish.

the problem is that the higher temperature requirement of discus is not compatible with the temperature requirement of neons...

you can perhaps try to do some research into what other type of fish act as dither fish for discuss, that can also handle the higher temperatures.

i do believe that in general, discus do not eat the much smaller neons and cardinals. (amazingly enough lol)

p.s. i believe that clown loaches also prefer slightly warmer temperatures, but i cant say whether the two types of fish would do well together in a tank.

I know for a fact that Siamese Algae eaters are definitely not shrimp safe. As soon as my shrimp molt then they are tasty morsels for the Siamese. Could not understand what were happening to them until I saw with my own eyes the nasty deed done. I thought them fish safe, but wondering now if baby dish will not be a snack for them as well.

    Hi Zippy

I have once kept Siamese Algae eaters with Discus, and I have to removed them because some of them was harassing the Discus, so if you want to proceed on that road, do so with caution.

    hi there.

I have golden algae which are in essence the same as Siamese algae eaters. i advice against adding them to a discus tank. they will attack the discus and try to feed on the slime coat on other larger fish and in turn cause injuries and other problems for your discuss. also a Siamese algae eater only eats algae when it is young and will eventually stop eating algae.

i feel that a good alternative for you would be bristle nose plecos. i have them as well. they leave the other fish alone. and are extremely good algae eaters. grow to a max size of about 15cm. the amount that you should get is completely dependent on how big your tank is. the only harassment that will occur is between the male bistlenose and other males. as long as you have many different areas in the tank that they can each claim as their territory then there will be no problem at all. i hope this helps. let me know if you need any other info.
