My Hailia hx-6530 power head pump makes a very irritating (next to my bed) noise 80% of the time. Sounds like a vibration/rotor scraping noise. I've taken it apart and I see nothing wrong. Should I buy a new pump or just a new impeller? I have no idea if this is a common problem with pumps

I've uploaded a video so you can hear the sound

    Thanks

Rinse out the impeller cavity and the impeller itself very well. Sounds like some of the pool filter sand made its way into the pump.

The pump itself was dead quiet when I had it, no issues like that. Biggest issue was the noisy overflow and trying to control it

New pump. Getting a new impellor may proove as painful as just buying a new pump.

The pump is 6 months old, it doesn't need to be replaced.

I've been running the same pump on my Discus/marine tank for well over a year now and its still dead quiet

Take the impeller shaft out and have a look it may be worn at one of the ends. Had the same problem with one of my pumps. I found that the end that the magnet slide over had been worn down by the magnet rubbing against it. If you think about it, it is like a grinding stone. Just my 2cents.

Took it apart again late last night. Could not find anything wrong or stuck in there. But I placed the pump on its side and seems to help allot . and I also notice when the pipe gets a bit of a kink in it the pump gets allot louder. I just hope the silence lasts

How much of a kink is there? If there is back pressure from the piping, you will get cavitation on the impellor, making it very noisy

Are the sucker feet still on the base?

kinks gone now. i check every day. and yes all the sucker feet are still there.

Is the rotor on the impeller suppose to be able to turn half a rotation when the magnet is not moving?

i'm going to venture a guess, that sound is caused by gas/air collected in the impellor cavity. My viaqua also does that. If i switch it on and off quite fast a few times i see tiny bubbles being blown out

Almost every 2nd reply here suggests that you check your impeller. Since, you are still not convinced, take your impeller to your fish/pet store and have them check it out. You should then be convinced....hopefully.

    Problem Solved!!!
