Can someone please give me the definition of a nano tank?

I browsed some of the pictures of the guy's nano tanks it seems to me like small amazon biotope tanks - heavily planted and some artistic influence like a piece of art type thing?

    Hey there,

Nano is simply a small fish tank. Doesnt have to be planted. If memory serves me right, nano is between 10 and 40 litres.

A tank smaller than that is called a pico. (Or pica. Cant remember exact word right now)

Its a tank and its nano :)

Jokes aside, like Ashley said usually under 40L and any style you like.
Fast to do maintenance on but need more regular maintenance.
Also a bit more difficult to balance water, lights, ferts etc wise than a
bigger tank. Not very forgiving when is comes to mistakes.

And your first one is usually a messup.

I have a 38litre nano, and a 4ft tank. I spend twice as much time and effort on the small tank comparex to the big one. As vis said, the smaller yhe tank is, the more concentrated any problem is. Very difficult to get that balance right. But very rewarding. Nanos are an art within a hobby.

i'm finding my 14l nano VERY rewarding. the male betta occupant's bioload is small and I do 20-25% water changes a couple of times a week. so far no problems.
just converted it to planted and hoping it continues doing well!

A Nano is actually anything up to 100L. A Pico is anything less than 15L.

Nanos are brilliant if you get it right. It takes a lot of time and patience to get a nano right. But it could look awesome! You could make a nano anything you want it to be. I've seen small marine nanos, malawi nanos, amazon nanos, etc. Just don't overstock with fish and you will be fine.

As Vis said though, changes happen very quickly in small tanks and you have to be very careful of water parameter changes.
