I have an bacteria bloom on my mopane wood and decided to get a normal pleco for the time being as they seem to eat it. They do. I had to do 2 friggen gravel vacs 2 days in a row.

Plecs do produce a lot of waste.
Some of the smaller ones (BN for eg) are a lot less messy than some of the bigger species.

i notice my plecos poo intermittently - and it depends what they eat - if they eat a lot of fresh algae then yeah they paint the tank with their strings off poo, but if they're on pellets then no.

Hence I prefer the smaller algae eaters, Pleco's become lazy when they are big and stop eating algae all together. When they start munching on the wood they become poop machines.
