    I noticed my female blue ram cleaning a stone in my tank on Friday night. This morning I have eggs. They are in a community tank so I'm not really sure what to do. They've become super aggro and take turns to defend the eggs and terrorise the rest of the tank. I'm trying to grow brine shrimp for the first time. Is there anything I should be doing besides enjoying the experience? :bigsmile:

    Would I be able to take the rock with eggs out of water and transfer it to another tank? Would that work?

    @MarcHawke

    Congrats on getting the Rams to spawn.

    No, you can not remove the eggs and parents to another tank and expect them to raise their fry.
    They will just eat it shortly after moving it. Rams are bred for numbers across the world and I find most pairs take ages to raise their own fry, the instinct to do so bred from them ages ago.

    You can remove however remove the eggs and hatch them seperate from the parents, if you care to. Should they hatch you need to feed them bbs as soon as they are free swimming.

    @Marco - Thanks very much. How soon would I be able to remove the eggs from the parents. From what I have read they continuously fan water over the eggs and eat the infertile eggs to prevent fungus or infection. How soon will they try to spawn again?

    @MarcHawke

    You can remove the eggs a few hours after they spawned. Yes, you need to keep water circulating around the eggs, an airstone placed close to the eggs set at a low rate will work. The eggs will probably fungus up, you can use methylene blue or hydrogen peroxide to prevent this.

    Just please realise that dong things this way might result in more Rams that do not have the ability to raise their own young.
    Its a decision you have to make.

    @DewaldC

    We discussed this topic on tasa some time back, shees,:)maybe two years ago. Its been hotly debated but in the discussion someone, dont recall who it was, pointed to an experiment conducted on Angels. In the experiment they used a pair of constant egg eating angels and placed their tank next to a tank which had a pair that raised their young without problems.
    Upon "viewing" the succesfull pair raise their young, the egg eating pair then "learned" and succesfully raised their own fry.
    Quite remarkable really.
    On the website for TFH there is even a claim that the same experiment was done using a television next to the tank that showed a dvd of an Angel pair raising its young. Result? Pair raised their next batch of fry!

    So, to answer your question - Um no authority, but evidence seem to point in the direction of it being learned yes, not genetically "inprinted"

    The female has taken to hiding in amongst the plants. I have added more flat rocks and will do a bit of a rescape around these rocks to provide plant made "enclosures".
