looks really nice, havent kept malawis before but have done plenty of reading as i always wanted a malawi tank. i think they prefer a fine subtrate, so pool filter sand or playsand should work better

    Plants are plastic:bigsmile:
"bugger" the guy at the shop told me to go this route:evil: with the gravel.
Will keep eye out on the tank and if needs to i will change most of the rough gravel for finer ones
    Thanks for the advice

didint mean to get you down :). malawis are diggers and the rough gravel is not gonna be good for them in the long run.

It won't get me down:p, will just help in the long run.
Any advice is welcome at this stage because i want to make a success of my tank.

Do you think i could "cover" the rough with the fine or would you rather remove and replace

they will dig right down to the glass, so i dont think just covering it will work, that being said your rocks must be placed on the base and then your substrate added around it, if you placed the rocks ontop of the substrate they will dig under the rocks and cause a rock fall and that could kill some fish.

That's the one thing they all agree on:bigsmile:
the rocks is places right on the glass with just a thin layer of plastic/rubber to protect the glass and hold the rocks in place - make them more stable. I did make sure the stuff is aquarium safe.
I will have a short discussion with the shopkeeper tomorrow:amazed: regarding the bad choice of substrate he made for me:noworry:.

    Hey Newby,

Ive always used silica sand mixed with crushed coral in my Malawi tanks with great success, Your fish will love the fine silica for digging purposes and the crushed coral not only looks great, it buffers up your ph as well.
