    Hi guys,

    So I had a fun experience today; got home from work to discover that one of my canisters had drained half of my tank during load shedding.
    I don't know why load shedding caused it, but once it lost power it continued to siphon out the water which leaked from the top of the canister. I think I hadn't attached one of clips properly last time I cleaned it. I've checked now and it works fine, and stops normally when I unplug it.
    I need some insurance though, so I've drilled a hole in the canister's pipe just below the water surface. Hopefully that will stop the siphon if this happens again.

    Just thought I'd share my fun day!

    Cheers,
    Gordon

    @Gordon,
    I can relate well. Last Tuesday morning I went into the lounge to feed my fish only to discover that a connection on my cannister had come loose and there was 300L of water on the floor.

    I like the idea of drilling a hole in the inlet pipe. :cool:
    The only thing that would worry my though, is with the pump still going, but sucking in air, would that not burn out the motor?

    Jip, if motor runs dry, it'll burn or actually melt. Is there not something on the market, like a water level alarm, that can notify a person or cut off the power if such a thing happens?

    Yes there is. Check Pretoria Motor Control Gear for such switches.

    Thanks Dash.
    I'm keen to try out this floating switch though. Going to look for one on the weekend!

    I don't have a canister but would be nice if you could have a drip tray like a geyser with a pipe outlet to the outside or drain.

    Yeah... but I can't think of an easy of doing that with the tank's location.
