@Chandz I am really interested if he is still available but I will have to possibly set up an entire tank for him...or maybe he can go with my S lucipinnis tank. TDS ~ 600 ppm. My problem is that I am going away on holiday from the 23rd to the 4th and it really would be cruel to put him in a new tank with an auto-feeder for a week so soon after getting him. My greed shouldn't outweigh his care.

Is he and one of your other males at each other's throat since they've bred? I scaped my tank back in the day so that they dont have a line of sight to each other. That helped with the aggression. Had 8 in the same tank

 

He/she is still available and is currently living in my sump. They were previously split into two smaller quarantine tanks and I recently moved them into their final larger tank which has a big rock in the middle. My biggest male is unfortunately actively seeking him/her to kill.

I must admit Tanganyikan fish really isn't my Forte and the only ones I've extensively researched is Tropheus and Ocellatus. So you would probably have a better idea if that combo would work or not.

I have a multi only tank, I love watching them interact with each other, they are definately not boring fish

 

Don’t get me wrong, I love Tangs too. They are my second favourite after South American cichlids, but almost all my time, space and research is spent on Apistos.

Ocellatus has always been my favourite shell dweller and I absolutely love them, but I actually got them for my boyfriend.

The only fish I’ve kept is my Apistos, a few Corys and a Clown Pleco. The rest I had to rehome or sell to make space for grow outs. I wish I had a fishroom, but currently only have a one bedroom townhouse to work with

Yes, they are tons of fun to watch. I’ve definitely never seen another fish as small and aggressive as Ocellatus

Sorry for the very late reply from my side. They are hardy little fish and very forgiving as I recall. But you are right about the agression and it is the right thing to do to separate them.

Will it be possible to purchase an additional ocellatus from your source? I am only asking because keeping at least 2 just makes their behaviour and interaction more rewarding to watch. And obviously the possibility of breeding them.

Do you add salt to the water to up the tds when you do a water change? I remember going overboard in building a spreadsheet that calculates the exact quantities of salts to add to get to lake tangyanika compisition. I then ordered chemicals from Merck. But this wasnt necessary. They are adaptable and consistency is key. Never got mine to breed so your touch and experience with the apistos are really showing here.

I am definitely interested but will only be able to make space for him in the new year unfortunately. And I will also really want to obtain at least one more if possible.

If you manage to sell him before then, please go ahead.

If you have never kept shell dwellers, these fish are fascinating. They dont grow big and patrol their little 10cm to 15cm space around their shells. Can keep them with brichardi or leptosoma easily. Or looks amazing with some julidichromis in a small tank setup.
