Hi, I need info regarding: freshwater pipefish and freshwater soles - feeding, breeding and general keeping.

Depends on the species really - sure, pipefish and sole may pop up in stores every so often, but each one may have different requirements. Many may require brackish water, especially among the soles (although some will do quite fine in freshwater; pipefish may need extremely soft water, often done with RO or rain water (others need brackish).

Make sure you know exactly what you're dealing with before purchasing.

Do you have a source for pipefish? What kind can you get?

 

It's apparently 'rainbow belly pipefish'

 

My local lfs sell the soles for R200 ea and the pipefish for R350 ea. i'm not sure if I want to take that risk yet.

 

Both groups have been known to be particularly difficult to feed, especially the pipefish. If you are keen on keeping these fish, I recommend getting some experience in growing live foods. Pipefish will eat little else (I've heard of very few marine pipefish eventually rolling over for frozen food, but never so in freshwater), so maybe get some practice growing or collecting such live foods (brine shrimp, cyclops, etc.). The other fish you have currently should enjoy these too.

Otherwise do a lot of reading in the meantime. These fish aren't impossible to keep by any means, provided you know what you're doing. When you feel ready, and you have the appropriate environment set up, head back to your store and order a few.
