I found this worm whilst cleaning the gravel in my tank. I cannot be 100% sure it was in the gravel but strongly suspect that it was. Anybody able to ID and give advice if this is a problem or not? I cant see any hassles with my fish, no lesions no marks at this stage

Doesn't look like planaria, is the body flat or round?

@jwb the body stretches a lot when it moves but is quite compact when it is not in motion. The worm has a weird movement almost like a catterpillar when "walking" and climbs up the container in the picture quite easily.

Does it swim? Best guess will be Stylaria (Oligochaetes). As per some searches, they are harmless, and a lot of fish will eat them."These worms generally are not a problem and often go un-noticed living in the gravel aiding in breakdown of wastes, however high numbers of particular species can indicate low oxygen levels, cloudy water, poor Redox and low filter productivity."

I would guess by your description it is a planarian worm. Usually multiply quickly when there is excessive organic waste in the tank like over feeding etc. Not harmful to the fish but may be to eggs if you have any fish breeding in there.

Were you able to ID the worm yet?

Hi guys, thanks for the assistance. I am still unsure of what it was but thankfully no damage to fish or system. Regular cleaning of the gravel has failed to find any other invaders so I am hopeful that the problem has been addressed.
