I’ve got a pair of red spotted deacons that are breeding like mad and would like some advice as to how to proceed. Over the last 2 month the lays 5 separate and very large number of eggs, most hatched this is the story.
    1. From the first successfully attempt (after some failures) about 200 babies hatched. After about one week 5 survived. I set up a second tank (Boyu 550) transferred the fry (used water from the mail tank) but after 2 days the little one died
    2. While the 5 babies were still in the tank the parents laid more eggs they also hatched. The fry were free swimming for about one week when I decided to clean one of the filters that was blocked (I covered the suction outlet) after cleaning it the parents panicked and ate all the fry. ... I leant...
    3. Soon after the laid again this time it appeared to be a larger number of eggs. They hatched and indeed more than the usual number of fry were swimming. We are now one week later, about 70% of the fry are gone but there is still a respectable number.
    Here is my question:
The parents will probably lay more eggs very soon. Should I
    1. Leave the fry with the parents and hope for the best
    2. Move the fry to the boyu, which is cycled by now or
    3. Move the parents into the buyo and let the fry stay in the larger tank?
    Thank you!

Hmmnn...."young" cichlid parents are often a bit overeager when it comes to protecttheir fry and inadvertantly chow a few...

They should not breed again if they have a large enough numer of fry to look after(aka enough fry to stimulate their protective behaviour of the fry)....if this is the case - rather leave things as is...
They should then raise the fry to about R1 to R2 coin size...by witch time the fry will want to start doing their own thing and start dispersing from the little cloud theve been traveling about then - this will be the best time from then to move them...
Letting young parents complete a spawning from egg to the "teenagers" leaving the nest promotes sucsessfull spawnings in future...

PS: the problem with your filter intake...easily sorted by placing one of those green cage Guppy net breeders round the intake - wont clog up like the sponge does...
