    Hi guys

I need your help with a part of my research. Can you please list your 10 most popular/favourite fish species. @Altum @Moolis @azurekoi and @Dirk Bellstedt I would greatly appreciate your inputs on this as well

    By tank census:
Guppies, convicts, kribensis, danios (rerio, coprae, zebra, Giant, gold zebra), Corydoras catfish(bronze, pandam elbino, hybrid?), otocinclus, white cloud minnows, tetra (neon, silver tip), Scissortail Rasbora, loach (kuhlli, skunk botia), SAE, Red tail shark (albino, black), platty, CAE, chocolate gourami, boesmani and a angle fish.

I do not want to switch the lights on to have a look - this is what I can remember ... I know I am missing a few. The first 5 are generation X .. i.e. they have a self sustaining population (yes just add water) - the oldest is the boesmani 4 years now.

I'm curious - what is this research for, exactly?

Not to criticize your interests, but this isn't really what I'd call 'static' info. People's interests change, and beyond that, different fish become popular with changes in trends etc. Even more so, every fishkeeper's interest can be as varied as the fish species themselves. By the end of this thread you'll likely have a list of all the ornamental tropical fish allowed in South Africa.

Thanks prof @Dirk Bellstedt and everyone else so far for your inputs. @SalmonAfrica the reason for me doing this is part of a business plan. I need to do a projected income analysis for the bank and I would like to do it with actual figures of public involvement rather than my own choices. The bank would be more interested by the ”potential client” aspect.

I would suggest you sit down with any successful Pet Shopowner (more than one even better) and discuss your business plan with them andget their input or hang around in a shop for long enough to actually see whatis going on. I do not recommend you copy them but learn from them as much asyou can!

The lists given here are wish lists by knowledgeable hobbyists and I would notbe recommended as a species lists for a shop! You will end up with lots of nicestock your customers do not buy. Rather start with bread and butter fish andlearn your own customers needs by introducing a new species every week andjudging by their ACTUAL support you order your next species.

I could go on for days here but bottom line is do notbase your business plan on knowledgeable customers needs but rather the need ofbeginners & those guys that do only want a healthy / beautiful aquarium andwork out how you would be able to get them to become knowledgeable customers.

If you want to sit down and talk CALL me I will assist asfar as I can. Just expect strait answers even if you might not like the answers:bigsmile:

@Moolis thanx a lot I really appreciate it. I will get in contact with you soon. The aim of this is not to be my actual stocklist but more a case of herding the bank in with 'these values are based on public popularity'. There is however a bigger picture behind this and that I would discuss with you later when we sit down to talk.
