Hi there , i recently obtained a frontosa from LPS , he is relitively big yet he looks like a frontosa i have never seen before (in pictures). when feeding him, i looked at the picture on the hikari packaging and saw a great resemblence. Attached is a picture of the food off the internet . and ill post pictures of mine
when i get the time . I am not fimiliar with this frontosa and mine may be a cross (not sure). but colouration and banding is very similar. Thanks

Is he a normal burundi? i dont think he is but i could be wrong. His 'white" bands go very blue/purple when sleeping , similar to that of the frontosa on the packaging

Thanks, he is still a little beaten up from the petstore, but is very docile. Thought he would be a lot more agressive. Im just interested to see what he is , Maybe @Jack Stone would perhaps know, or @Altum ?

    thanks

Haven't got a clue dude. It can be very hard to tell, especially with bad quality photos. Could possibly be a little stressed when you took the photo as well. These fish change color all the time and it's up to you to work out what the dominant or default color is, each fish will be somewhat different too, most people probably compare dominant males as they're usually the most striking fish in the tank. Some males are known to go completely black during breeding time. Ja... it's very hard to tell... maybe somebody more experienced can give you an educated guess - @sarf @Rowland @Herve anybody?

Personally I'd go ask the pet store where the fish came from. If it's from a supplier they should be able to tell you the variant.

Thanks @Jack Stone , always helping with them tanganyikans.
I got him on Saturday so he may still be adjusting to the bigger space and bigger guys around him.
I will ask the petshop, but they sold it to me as a 'frontosa' , thus im assuming they imported them as Burundi's .
Else they would have charged me a larger sum for him im sure
I am just amazed by the thickness of the bands. Could he be a result of a cross breed?
Thanks , and yes if anyone can help me out here further it would be really great.

Thats a burundi frontosa..which is the types found in pet shops..the one on the hikari packaging is a different variant..its a tanzanian type..possibly mpimbwe blue

your one is a 100% burundi coz burundi is ony variant that has a straight line that runs over the eye...cyphoti;apia collectors identify the fish according to the shape of the "mask" as it varies depending whereabout on the lake the fish originated from...here is a pic of my zaire blues..see the difference on the face mask..

Thanks @Rowland And @sarf and the others who responded . I bought him as a common Burundi , so wasnt expecting him to be anything else in a batch of Burundi. He is still a great fish, just the thickness of bands got me questioning. For his size , i only paid 300ish so i think it was a real bargain , Like ive told Jack, ill look at getting myself some Zaire Blues (am i right in saying theyre mobas?) like you have. My future dream fish, if you ever have fry to sell please keep me in mind, They are IMO the greatest cichlid one can keep in the hobby

    Thanks,Jason

There a numerous variants of zaire blues. Mine were not mobas, they were Mikulas...one of the newer variants of zaire blues. Sold the batch to a friend of mine..they are huge now. Another mener on this forum Sean, had some mobas which he bred, but he has since sold the group and babies. Frontoasa are nice...do best on their own though for breeding
