I have never heard this before.
In fact certain foods have the opposite effect and feeding them can help encourage breeding.

Well this is a great way to get you to buy a certain brand of food!! Yes, not all brands helps breeding along as the better brands does. My favourites will always be Omega, Hikaria and Tetra, with the occasional live foods, but I do not believe brand name foods will discourage any fish from reproducing. Maybe if you buy lead soaked no name flakes that is a tinge or two away from whitish silver, or radioactive green I might worry, but otherwise I see this as an attempt to get you to buy a brand the lfs believes in.

It also depends, guppies will breed no matter what you feed them, while discus needs 'n specialized diet before they will proliferate.

Absolutely true @Donovan_21... Certain foods(especially certain foods aimed at the Malawi market) contain levels of testosterone to boost the fishes adult breeding colours from a young age...

Unfortunately, females who ingest this often become sterile...

...and sure - you can post the name - would be usefull to know in advance...for those that want to still breed... and for those who want their Malawis to STOP Breeding....lol
One that I can mention is Cichlid Supreme...Awesoem colour enhancer though

Not to sure what the long term effects on the female would be after eating it for an extended period.... take them off it and try maybe?

A great "Cheap" food for big cichlids is switching them over to high protein/Summer koi food... but not the cheapie red&green pellets... Aquamaster is a great brand - and at round R100 per kilo it is worth it. the Clown loaches would still require a sinking pellet of some kind though - Also feed them things like blanched brocoli, baby marrow and Brussel sprouts...
