Filter cleaner

    Does anyone keep shrimp inside there filters. I did a trail and it worked.
    I have a 180 ltr community aquarium and i have 2 500ltr/h canister filters.
    I dont have any mechanical filtration inside the canisters only biomedia and ive made pre filters for the canisters.
    Now what ive done is to try and preventing my shrimp babie from becoming lunch i e removed the sponge frim one canister filter inlet so that baby shrimo can be sucked into the pre-filter where they can grow out.
    I left my filter running 2 months without cleaning and when i did maintenance the ore filter with now adult shrimp was remarkable clean compared to the filters that was still shrip safe and i also have about 30 odd healthy shrimp that i put backbinto the tank. Is anyone else doing the same what can the pros and cons be long term

    Yep in my 180L I can always find some neocaridina on top of the filter floss.

    They can come and go freely, but they reckon it’s the best spot in the tank - uneaten fish food and other debris to feed on. Not bothered by fish.

    And they definitely help keep things clean. See there are some small trumpet snails as well. Time to change the floss.

    Just make sure shrimps cant get to the pump.
    Impeller will definitely mince them
