There was a rather heated debate about this some time ago. I have a rather deep sandbed in the 2.5 and i have as of yet to notice any of the worms they mention here.

My sandbed is very much alive due to the CAPM that i added when i put in the PFP, but no worms and i also dont see tubifex living long with fish in a tank....

I thought this thread would get your attention Henk. The previous "heated debate" you are referring to was in Zafgak's Sump lecture that he never got to complete. I moderated that thread because the heat got a bit unbearable, and be warned, I will moderate unnecessary debates here as well. You may not agree with a DSB, however there has been some documented evidence of it being used in a fresh water tank.

Butcherman, would you clarrify if this is a DSB in the display tank, or in the sump?

First off i think its is important to know what happens in our tanks!

That being said I'm not saying everyone need a deep sand bed. A tank and work perfectly with out one.

@ Henk I think the Marco life in the DBS is only there to decompress the sand there buy aerating it. Maybe if a person had a DSB in a sump (where the fish would not eat the worms, the flow was right and mulmcould collect), one would see more life. The article also refers to using Malaysian snails (i think they are banded here in SA but i might be wrong) to turn over the sand. Maybe a lack of mulm and the increase flow in the your tank also plays a factor in no having any worms there. as the article state as these are also important factors after all you need the right conditions for life to thrive. I'm not staying don't vacuum your gravel or stop your flow, just hypothesizing why you don't see the life this article says you could see in a dsb.

From what i understand a dsb can be utilized in your display and a sump.

agreed most people might not be aware of the effect of having a deep sand bed would have.
