Did you use water strait out of the tap? I did a water change took water strait out of the tap added the water conditioner and added it too the tank lost a few hundred rand's worth of fish.

IMO I DONT THINK IT IS THE WATER FROM THE TAP AS I DO ALL MY WATER CHANGE LIKE THIS AND NEVER LOST A FISH LIKE THIS! I add my water from my tap in to my tank every week and only add prime every second to third week if need!
Howzit @Quue - might be worth buying an ammonia test kit and testing for traces. This will tell you if your filtration is adequate for the stocking levels - how many fish remain alive? What water conditioner do you use? When was your second last water change? Over time wood will lower your pH and the water change can bring it up again too rapidly for the fish - thus, your twice weekly schedule is ideal if you're doing that every week. Go ahead and test the tanks pH as well, then test the pH of your water change water just before you put it in (after dechlorination). @rednox - Come on dude, you can't tell people that works - way too much risk (of municipality dosing too much chlorine just before you do water changes) and it will only work for some people some of the time.
dude i do not say people must do it like this or that it works i just told u how i do it and that it works for me, if his water change is the same like he always done it its not to say that it will be the problem! but like u said about the wood that makes sense aswell.a lot of people do it like this!
Sorry for the loss Quue and Sorry to come in hear off topic. I do the same as Rednox only because I dont know of any better and I also dont have any problems so far yet. What is the correct way of changing water taking into account that when I do 25% water change it is more that 100liters.
the tank has been running for 2-3months the question how long did the tank run before adding fish? and ive never had to test my water and all has been ok the gf not happy her babies are gone but to be honest i think im going to take that tank done for a while the lose has hit hard and alot of work going into such a small tank i think we will shut it down and just keep our big boy going just a little sore hahaha not giving up maybe just need a little more time to handle 2 or 3 again wish me luck guys
good luck quue! johan so far, rams and large cichlids, corys, silver dollers, tinfoils, guppys diffrent plecos, cae and gouramis!
@Quue sorry man thought i read that tank had only been running for 2 weeks hope it works out and know that it has happened to most of us, would def try work out what went wrong
@OBI some people beleive in aging the water so they may get a 100L container to put the water in and let it stand for a day or two this gives enough time for the waters HP to settle and in some cases like mine the ph will drop from 7.5 to about 6. The way I do it is just my way and some people will do it a little differently but it all comes down to the same thing, what I do is i have a 150L water tank in the corner I take my hosepipe and fill the tank once full I will add my chlorinating drops in and circulate the water with a return pump, once I have the water on the same temp as my main tank I then pump the water into my main tank, because of my substrate the ph stays on 7.5 and therefore I choose not to age my water. The importance is for you to understand the reason they put chlorine in water, this is to kill bacteria in the water (they are aiming at the bad bacteria but chlorine kills all bacteria good or bad). Now lets say we do water changes your way you pour tap water with chlorine in into your tank, chlorine does what it needs to do (kill bacteria) this chlorine will kill your bacteria in your water on your substrate and if any of this new water goes into your filter... if you do not want to go the route of having a WC container you can always treat each bucket before pouring it into your tank. hope this helps. sorry to hear of your loss OP.
When I started shopping for a tank i quickly realised that bigger is better. I don't have much experience but from what has been said I would hazard a guess that chlorine was introduced and the small tank helped with an ammonia spike. I am wondering if a small WC of 20% with chlorine may have killed the bio filter and high nitrates combined with ammonia spike killed the fish... yeeeeaaahhh. Tester kits are invaluable. Ammonia, Nitrate and pH. This is Horacio discovering high Nitrates...
I also put 1000l of water into my 3000l of tanks each weekend straight from the tap with no additives. But it also depends how hard each ones fish are.
I don't trust the tap water any more, hell I have installed filters on most of my taps and I don't drink water from the tap. Most of the water purification plants being used comes from the pre apartheid era and aren't being properly maintained.
There are a lot of people that use their tap water straight into their tanks. I have been forced into doing this as I cannot have a storage tank and hauling 150l of water is a pain in the gat! I add the full tanks volume of Prime (ie I'm double dosing Prime) straight to the tank and then switch on the tap. This may land up in tears eventually but the flip side is that I put off/neglect my wc's beacause they are a pain!
It's possible that the municipality put a large dose of something in the water on that particular day. For instance if there was a pipe burst in the area and soil got in the water, they might have put in more chlorine than usual to compensate.
