    IMG-20121121-00299.jpgHi There Guys

Have attempted aquascaping for the 1st time, but I dont think you can call this tank aquascaping, but it should at least fall in some scaping category, hopefully, lol.

Anyways, I am considering adding freshwater Shrimps.

Any suggestions from the guys out there ???
    You may PM me.

    thanks in advance

You have to be on top of your water quality and chemistry. Not all shrimps are made equal, some are more sensitive than others.

Hi Rudi. Thanx for that information. I am currently doing a 10% water change daily & I only have plants & 10 Cardinals in the tank at present, with about 7 small Apple Snails.
Water chemistry is good. Ph, Gh & Kh are on par. Would like to know where I can find some good stuff, lol

I would also suggest adding more plants, oh also covering your outlet inside the tank with some opencell sponges, if you do manage to breed the shrimp they easely get sucked up by your outlets to your filters.

Unfortunately guys shrimps are still illegal in South Africa. We have to wait for the BL to be released regarding them. We have all heard the rumours that they will be off the list once it gets released. But until then it remains illegal to keep them. A decision has been reached that we may discuss bl species, but TASA cannot condone keeping illegal species.

Oops, illegal. I have heard about it & why it is illegal, but didnt know if it was true or not. Now i do. Well, I thought its like smoking Marijuana. When caught by the authorities, they'll just brush it by since its not so bad, even though it is, lol, but when caught with a boat load of it, well, then you have a problem. I dont want a boat load, just enough for my own use. I am referring to the Shrimps & not the latter, lmk. Thanks Hein & Wyvren & Rudi again

the problem is a blanket banning of all shrimps. You see, those blue and red freshwater lobsters you get on gumtree and junkmail from time to time - well those are extremely invasive and do hugh damage to our water ways. And some uneducated person that wants to keep a fishbowl will get one because it looks cool and then will get tired of it after 6 months and then instead of killing it, they either flush it or release it into our waterways. So to protect our waterways, they blanket banned all freshwater shrimp and the likes even the non invasive ones.

there is hope that once the new banned list comes out, the lobsters will still be banned but the common cherry and chrystal shrimp will be allowed.

Ah shrimps. Have kept them before but don't like them. To picky about water conditions. Maybe if the BL allows you 1 day. Keep a blue lobster. Nice pets but are escape artists and pinch like crap

Caridina Nilotica is a small shrimp found through-out Africa and South Africa in all major river systems. Now, to blacklist this shrimp that occurs naturally on the whole continent is totally ..... it's like banning you from keeping any fish from Africa. Except this shrimp can't invade nowhere because it is already there, naturally.

    @andries

That is not entirely true. Several species of Caridina inhabit local freshwaters. C. nilotica could easily displace these through careless releases from the aquarium trade.

Another good reason for the ban is so people don't just scoop up every last local shrimp from local ponds and stream, leaving the species at risk. I believe that is the very same reason why nearly all local (SA) freshwater fish are also on the blacklist.

Well I am seeing more and more Shrimps in the LFS in JHB - but crazy prices - like R45 to R90 a single shrimp, now I can get 1/2 KG with chips for that.

    Later Ferdie
