Hi, if i told you i want to set up a tank outside, what would you guys say. i got a tank from a relative, i do not have any space left in my apartment to set up this tank but i would like to, would it be ok if i set it up on the balcony, you see, the balcony has a recessed section where i can put the tank, so the sunlight will not touch it and neither will the rain, however, it can sometimes get cold in winter and things like that.

do you guys think it would be ok? or am i pushing my luck here?

    Thanx
    N

    Hi Nadeem
Yes it can be done. what i do in summer is to put the small fish in a filtered tank in my courtyard.
Just paste a sheet of sagex on the back and maybe the sides to maintain the temperature better and also save on electricity.

oh brilliant, thanx spider, should i put 2 heaters in the tank just in case? i did actually thinking about what could one use to insulate the tank abit, my idea was those thermal blankets that are used to put around a geyser, what is SAGEX though?

Yep you are right zoom. i hope you got the picture there Nadeem.
with a tank less than 300litres i would say 1x300W heater should be ok.

top notch, thank you guys. i could fit the tank in the spare bedroom, but then i have an angry woman to deal with, so im glad this will work out, one more little thing, what types of plants is good for filtering water? i understand that plants are good for sucking up nitrates and things like that, what plants must i look for? and what kind of light will i need for the plants to be happy?

I have 5 tanks under my second carport in the side of my house. All heated, filtered ,and sometimes, full of algae (was not much trouble for my plecos). I resorted to covering the back of the tank with black refuse bags and fitting my canopies on . . this way, less light entered the tank and they've been crystal clear ever since . .

hornwort. needs very little to thrive. very good with nitrates etc. even then add a filter , even if its an air pump sitting inside your flat, with an air pipe going into the tank.

what type of fish you thinking of putting in there?

i think its still a bit cold.. average temp needs to come up a bit i think..so your heater might be working overtime.. expect a very high electricity bill.

hopefully november will be warm enough..
