black list?

I was looking through the classifieds and i saw some thing about snails being blacklisted and the post was removed?

What is all that about?

Can some one explain the "black list" to me?
Thought i would just ask before i go and do some thing silly

Black list = illegal to import, own, sell and everything you can think of. Things on the black list are deamed to be invasive and can threaten ecologies in South Africa. Take fresh water crayfish as an example, the can decimate the fish population in our dams, and actually cause earth dam walls to fail due to the fact that they burrow into the walls. Another good example is the common carp. They will turn crystal clear water in to a muddy mess in no time due to their feading habits, blocking light form reaching the bottom of the dam, which in turn will lead to plants dying and oxygen depleation of the water. Invasive plants choke our water ways making them unnavigable by boat. Bass in the Vaal river system are slowly but surely busy destroying the indigenous fish population. If you have them, don't talk about them on this forum, and if you get rid of them, do it in such a way that you are not going to effect the ecosystem of any water body.

 

Ok well firstly all snails are blacklisted, so we can technically not buy them sell them give them away... Problem is we all have them as they travel well, so we get a plant from a friend and next thing we have a snail infestation...

As for the blacklist this a list the has all the species we are not permitted to keep. There is a sticky somewhere with this list.

Not quite, in the first place we are not allowed to keep black listed species. Secondly, if you do have them the right thing to do would be to get rid of them without the risk of them ending up in a body of water. Lots of people on the forum have them, plants, fish, shrimps. But they don't advertise it and they don't talk about them. Do a forum search on "black listed". There are loads of threads.

On this forum, we try not to discuss BL species, (encourage) as to their keeping/breeding/trading (giving away) etc.
Keep in mind that some species ( plant or animal) are on this list, because they are highly invasive. Others are very rare and on the Cities list - Critically-/endangered.
