    Hi All,

I saw today at the petshop, Fluval Ammonia Remover Filter Media. It looks like small little stone chips!

    Does this stuff work?
Is it a type of media that needs to be changed every month or so?
or does it need regeneration of some sort?

    Any input welcome

Its actualy zeolite - a natural material that binds ammonia - great as a quick fix in new systems, but because it removs all of the ammonia, your filter bacteria colony dies back due to lack of "food"...

Use it in new systems if you want to prevent "new tank syndrome" - but for me personally,I dont use it long term as media - just a quick fix after lets say a 24hour power cut...

Can be recharged in extremely strong salt solutions...

A lot of people use it for a new tank, and as it becomes depleated, it becomes bio-media.

Is this myth or truth @azurekoi ?

Lets just say that the basic chemistry/bio-chemistry is true.... as the Zeolite reaches the end of its capacity to absorb NH compounds, your filter will have a "bit" of bacteria going - by then the bacteria will also colonise the SURFACE of the zeolite...so yes,it does go biological. Problem is that it has a far inferior surface area compared to a good grade sintered glass product or something like Seachem Matrix...

Thanks for the info guys, I was slowly changing out the media in my Fluval that I got with a second hand tank. I also saw this stuff in the fluval.

The dude never changed the media in the filter he told me its been like that for about 2 years. 1st basket from bottom (Zeolite mixed with charcoal\ carbon) 2nd basket (charcoal\ carbon) 3rd basket (ceramic rings)

    nice hey!

Well anyways its looking better now with my new media in it!
