Aha, thats the reason, so, either a very small HOB or something like a corner filter, just not a corner filter(damn I hate those things.)

My suggestion:
A small HOB filter will do the trick, with a sponge over the intake, and minimal flow.
An apple snail will help to keep the tank clean, and keep him company.
Vallis (or even twisted vallis) will look nice and could resemble rice!

i would actually keep that statue. it sets the scene/mood in the tank. meditative calm with the betta just floating about.

I think I am going to try something like that in my 2ft tank and because I am martial artist and like all things Asian it should fit in 100% with my room.....lol

hob - hang on back filter. its the type that hooks over the side/back of the tank with a pipe in the water and the return falls back like a small waterfall. . . .
