Oh good old river sand , my very first planted tank was riversand, it took like a month to clear up even after washing it , but it did look so natural

If you are trying it , the best way i found to plant it is to break it up in smaller pieces and plant them in a grid pattern relatively close,...
You could try Eleocharis parvula (dwarf hair grass) i have had them carpeting in a low tech tank it just takes a bit of time and also a root tab...
