As far as I am aware the Figure 8 and Green spotted have not been bred in home aquariums... They do indeed need brackish conditions to thrive...

Any LFS will have sponge some even have sponges that already has a hole cut in it - and you can just add a cable tie to the top to hold it in...
I tried the stocking cover once and felt it blocked the flow to much - switched to using a sponge (the sponge also acts like a pre-filter)...
