Yea it could just have been some unhealthy stock, I would like to see the substrate but I agree with @MariaS that if the clown loaches are healthy...
So after finally deciding to get my first cichlid tank going I decided on GBR's, asked my lps to get me some and yesterday went in to pick up some...
I have used slate (not roof tiles but the odd shaped natural pavers),works great, if it has sharp edges just take a broken tile and rub the two...
Nice tanks full of happy healthy fishes - with names!... don't get much better than that! I might just be old and full of ......well you know...

Miserable weather here also, but water change Sunday has to happen, at least once you get going the cold outside isn't such an issue, Water...
