    Are you sure that the eel was eating a live tetra? sometimes the stock is just plain unhealthy, and sickly and just too weak, the weak fish die...

    I would say a couple of rams (6 or 8), lots of cories (10), Khuli loaches, the more you have and the more shelter they have, the more you will see...

    Did you look around the tank, they may have jumped?....how big are the clown loaches? The clowns could be harassing them, causing them to stress...
