Ok, I've taken the plunge and re-done the whole tank.Looks alot better I think...i have updated the original build thread.
Its very quiet now, I only hear the tank when im sitting right next to it, whereas before i could hear it from my bedroom:amazed:
its capped about 4-5cm

Ok guys, this is getting out of hand now. It is spreading:sad2: and, i removed one of my plants and smelt that it is not smelling nice at all...
I've got 2 x Eveready 11w daylight and 2 x Philips 18w daylight(all 4 are energy savers)
