Good for you @Lappies... Easiest would have been to refer the people to TASA - that way they get educated about this issue and we get some more members...

    It is supposed to.
If a LPS is caught with BL items, fish, snakes, reptiles or (Ahhhhhhhh) Arachnids they can be fined a VERY hefty sum.

Fishkeepers "avarice" for the forbidden will always fuel the drive/need for LFS's for keeping/stocking BL species...

That does NOT mean that once one is educated to the reasons WHY we are prohibeted keeping said species, you go out and buy them.....

Saw some Black spotted Silver Dollars - Mettynis lippincotianus? yesterday at a LFS that I respect ... Even for me,the temptation was GREAT!!!! , but,the law is the law... Why don't we get together and lobby Government on certain species(shrimp, some Tetraodon species...etc...) with CONCRETE reasons why we think certain species should NOT bebanned... - (Sorry @Zoom - had a talk with 2 of the LFS "representative's 4 DEAT over the last week, and the buggers realy DONT have a clue....)

Wrotte this thread a while ago - lots of you have read it and got a new understanding to the reasons behind it... Burn some "cap" - PM me with some CONCRETE reasons with you sugestions for non-inclusion on the BL and I plan to DO SOMETHING ABOUT T%HIS in the New Year.... Since my bizz gor closed down by no fault of my own over Xmass - think it's time I give somethong back to the hobby that has provided me with a income for so many years....

Going out on a very shaky limb here guys...but I have channels to DEAT...Why dont we make a concerted, educated and collective effort to have a VOICE!!!!

Will have the time over the next few weeks to do this before I have to start "working @ the consumer trap of providing" again - more than willing to give some of my time to a cause that I feel strongly about....

Looking for hard facts.annecdotal evidence,links,etc.... PM me...

    FIRE!!!!!

There's been loads of posts on the forums about it. I think there's even links to the draft lists etc.

I never had the time in the last few years to be active on this forum. Just spend a few hours reading some threads and YES there are still a lot of passion out there !!!!! KEEP IT UP

Back to this topic, it seems like the legislation around the Black list is still a very contentious issue. This article, thread is very well written and azurekoi we need to have a drink and talk a lot more.

Only with the power of many might we be able to ensure that our opinions and needs are met in legislation. For me it is not only my business but also a lifelong passion shared with marines.

@Pet Stop - Thanx Moolis... Looking forward to the chat(and a drink or to of course...lol)

Youre right though, the BL will always be contentious - every hobbyist(no matter what hobby) has that "bigger, better, faster, more" bug that drives them to keep the species of their dreams...just a pity that sometimes those dreams are part of the reason our planet is in such a fragile ecological state...

Where can we find the latest blacklist? I can't seem to find it. Would really like to know how much it's changed.

The latest blacklist hasn't been passed yet. The old one, (under rule and regs in the forum) is still in effect until Pres. Zuma affixes his signature and stamp to the new one.

After posting something wrong on the forum I went to check the blacklists and was quite shocked to see that most of the plants that are found on the market are in the blacklists.

Black list is shocking - amazing to see how many blacklisted species are actually in the retail market !! and very easily accessible

guess as a responsible fish keeper its important to know these species and try not include them in aquariums

Unfortunately, petshops tend to get a few "immigrants" among their stock every now and then, especially when the tank included wild caught fish. Some sell them, others hand them in like guns. A certain unnamed petshop had a very nice snakehead up for grabs a while back ;)

Yeah understandable - and sure these species are blacklisted with good reason - biggest being they are alien species and suppose could cause al sorts of havok in our water ways should a novice keeper decide to release them into the wild .

Snakehead is a prime example of species wrecking havok in certain countries - and all because of one wreckless person everyone suffers

So wheres the list of species we are allowed to keep ?? any links ?? - just seemed that the blacklist was mighty long ! what was left for the white list ??

Guys, dont want to be a Bah-Humbug - Fly in the ointment type of oke,but wrote this to be an explanation behind why there is a Black list and the ecological reasons behind its existance.... please start a new thread on issues you might have with it or whatever...

And remember -> Forum rules state that we may not discuss BL species....

Absolutely. I'm not encouraging the trade, just mentioned that stowaways to happen and that's why we sometimes see them in LFS. They weren't bought or ordered, they just kinda hid among the horde. The fact remains that the Black List feels like a huge overkill, but looking at the potential risks of some of those species in the wild, it's merely to protect our natural fauna from extincion, or rather replacement by appetite...

cool - lets leave the BL and the species on there alone - Full Stop.... just such a interesting topic and as a keeper I will just have to respect it and more research it outside the Trop Aqua forum ..

So anyone know of decent breeder and pet store in CT ?
